- Used to indicate a general tendency, common phenomenon, or a prevailing state of affairs.
- It often implies ‘in any case,’ ‘at any rate,’ or ‘despite other considerations,’ serving as a transition or conclusion.
- Can also express a slight nuance of inevitability or a critical observation about human nature or situations.
- While its traditional kanji is 兎角 (rabbit horn), meaning ‘a trifle,’ the adverbial とかく for ‘generally/tends to’ is almost exclusively written in hiragana in modern Japanese.
